SIR – I gather the Titanic sank on April 14, 1912. The Public inquiry about it started on May 2, 1912 – 18 days later. It heard from 96 witnesses, and then published its report on June 30, 1912 – 77 days after the disaster.
A century on, it now takes those in authority over us longer than that to inquire over what to have for breakfast.
Some things never change, though. The conclusion of the inquiry was that the ship was sunk by an iceberg. This just goes to show that complicated expensive inquiries that end up stating the glaringly obvious are not a recent phenomenon.
