SIR – Despite being refused permission for a new Tesco Express in Idle, it seems that the company is determined, as usual, to get through this hurdle, and has now submitted an amended application (T&A, April 13). This is despite the fierce local opposition to the proposal.

It appears that Tesco, and other supermarkets, are intent on taking over every aspect of life in all our towns and villages, thereby destroying other businesses in their wake.

It was reported (T&A, April 13) that the nearby T&V Off-Licence & News, run by Mr & Mrs Patel, had received no notification of the new application despite lodging a petition against the original proposal.

Bradford Council’s Planning Department described this as an “oversight” that they would correct. However, this is by no means the first “oversight” by that department in recent times. One has to wonder whether it really is fit for purpose.
