SIR – Having lived near to the Greengates crossroads of the A658 and the A657 for many years, I am only too aware of how busy and congested this junction can be. There is no doubt that traffic improvements are needed and are long overdue here.

With this thought in mind, I was absolutely amazed and actually disgusted to read in the T&A (January 3) that the small triangle of land at the junction of Harrogate Road and New Line, earmarked to improve left-turning traffic from Harrogate Road on to New Line towards Calverley, is being put up for sale by Bradford Council.

Perhaps the person doing this has not realised that the land was obtained for road improvements!

When, several years ago, the old buildings at this point were demolished, and an item appeared in the T&A along with a plan as to how the improved junction would look, I thought, ‘What an excellent idea’.

We all know that money is tight and that road improvements are not at the top of the list for our Council, but surely if this land is sold and developed the chance to improve at least one side of this busy junction will be lost forever.
