SIR – Last winter, there were more than 16,000 hospital admissions in England as a result of falls on ice or snow.
While roads are routinely gritted in more affluent areas, pavements and roads in Owlet Hall, East Shipley, are often neglected, making it difficult for everyone but especially the most vulnerable.
Terrifically steep hills such as Hawthorne Avenue are left ungritted. The whole length of Hawthorne Avenue and Lilac Grove are dangerous in icy conditions as are the other pavements in the area, but despite Bradford Council being repeatedly contacted by councillors and MP Philip Davies, Hawthorne Avenue is only gritted if a bin collection is due.
I am disabled and regularly use taxis or public transport. The pavements and roads up here remained treacherous for weeks in recent winters. My house is on the very steepest part of Hawthorne Avenue. Taxis cannot reach it – heaven help anyone who needs an ambulance.
When contacted, the Council just trots out a pile of statistics about doing better overall than most councils. Every time it snows I am left feeling very vulnerable and isolated.
Mrs Tanith Dale, Hawthorne Avenue, Shipley
