SIR – Graham Hoyle has a funny idea of “a bit of a breeze” (Letters, December 10). Winds of 130mph are generally associated with Caribbean hurricanes rather than the severe Atlantic depressions which sometimes hit Scotland. Yes, a dynamo blew out on one faulty wind turbine. No-one was killed and the general public was never endangered.

By contrast, the toxic blow-outs of nuclear power stations from Chernobyl to Fukushima have lethal consequences for human, animal and plant life many years after the first victims die. Wind energy is a big part of the answer to our energy needs in northern Europe. What is more, it will help to reverse the global warming that is rapidly ruining our planet. In centuries ahead, the actions of today’s climate-change sceptics (‘actions’ because cynical, false ideas currently feed into weak Government actions) will make depressing, not amusing reading.
