SIR – Red Saunders’s exhibition Hidden, showing photographs recreating overlooked historical moments from Britain’s struggle for democracy, has appeared at The Impressions Gallery in Bradford.
Lovers of working-class history will enjoy learning about Hild of Whitby, a champion of female education; Mary Wollstonecraft, champion of women’s rights; the swing riots of 1830; Wat Tyler and the peasants’ revolt 1381; Leveller women of the English Revolution 1647; Tom Paine, author and revolutionary who became a key figure in the struggle for American independence; William Cuffay and the London chartists 1842 and John Ball, the hedgerow priest who was excommunicated, imprisoned and executed.
Impressions Gallery is an independent, not-for-profit space for contemporary photographs, with a mission to show photographs that make you think and talk. It certainly does that.
The exhibition at Centenary Square runs until December 10. Worth a visit.
