SIR – Westfield made a profit of £2.13 billion last year so they have the funds but insufficient faith in Bradford to speculate £300 million on the rehash of the retail development. Instead they require to absolve themselves of all risk through having firm financial commitment from prospective tenants. That they were unable to obtain this in times of comparative retail boom does not auger well for their chances in the current economic situation.
But there is a way forward.
If Bradford Council and Westfield could get together and integrate Xrail and a city centre station within the retail complex, both projects could elicit public pride, enthusiasm and probably funding to engender their mutual success.
Who is going to have the courage to make the first move?
John Pashley, Westcliffe Avenue, Baildon
