SIR - Hustler is one of the names referred to in the article about the origin of names (T&A, September 1).

Hustlergate, we are told, was named after Bradford businessman John Hustler. I believe Hustler Street, which branches off Undercliffe Lane and goes to Beech Grove, was also named after him.

It crosses Newlands Place and I was brought up in a house at that junction.

On the south side of Hustler Street was what we always called Garnett Hall but which I noticed later on maps was named Undercliffe House.

When I was a boy the hall was empty and in bad condition but we played in the grounds and in winter ventured onto the ice covering the lily pond. There were some hen runs within the grounds, one of which my father rented.

On one occasion we went into the cellars through one of the broken windows. I would be only eight or nine years old. When we saw a skeleton painted on the ceiling of the cellar we made an extremely quick exit!

It was said the Garnett family had lived there and they owned Garnett Mills in Barkerend Road.
