SIR - Reading about the cuts in care for the elderly and disabled and the increased charges proposed by the Council, it is a disgrace and very frightening.

I myself, in my coming years, will probably need some help to be independent. Like many others the prospect gives me no comfort and I can only wish for a sudden and pain-free end to my life.

If this is so I will escape high nursing home costs, my house sale and savings being used - the penalty of being thrifty and a saver for the proverbial rainy day.

Is this how the elderly should feel? Well we do.

Local councillors have to review the proposals after various consultations have been held. I don't think this will happen, I think decisions have already been made.

Where are the extra volunteers coming from to look after more than 500 needy persons? In theory they are in the waiting area just eager to help. Reality is so different, lonely and frightening.
