SIR - Derrick Hargreaves (T&A August 25) has a point when he suggests that fuel costs should be the way to reduce climate change emissions so that the polluter pays. However it is not that simple as this would penalise rural areas where distances are large and public transport scarce.
There is also a need to consider the energy and resulting emissions used in manufacturing and maintaining his Land Rover Discovery, and it is difficult to make a case for such a vehicle for private use by city dwellers.
Both Mr Hargreaves and his Mondeo man would make a real contribution to reducing climate change if they drove one litre vehicles that do more miles to the gallon and have very low road fund tax.
