SIR – What’s all this about David Cameron agreeing that Margaret Thatcher should get a state funeral?

It isn’t as if we’re being churlish opposing something that is normally done. In fact, the only previous Prime Minister that I’m aware of receiving such an honour was Winston Churchill and that was because he led the country to victory in wartime as part of a coalition.

The country was able to distinguish the difference from Churchill the war leader and Churchill the Tory Prime Minister; that was why he lost to Clement Attlee in 1945, yet Attlee never got a state funeral despite being Churchill’s wartime deputy. So why should Mrs Thatcher – a figure who succeeded in dividing the country more than anyone since?

Let’s not forget she destroyed hard-working mining communities, condemning many to a life of benefits that Mr Cameron now wishes to end.
