SIR – In response to the letter from Alan Chapman (T&A, June 1) regarding my role in Provident Finance deciding to build their new office in Bradford city centre, I would make the following points.
In my role as Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and the Economy, I am called upon to make statements on behalf of the Council – which is what I did in this instance. I made no claim of personal or political involvement in the press statement he purports to quote.
For the record, I was involved in the decisions to support the investment in Bradford and the financial arrangements made to ensure that the scheme was successfully completed.
As we were in a situation where the Council had no overall control, all major political parties had had an input into this type of development.
The regeneration of Bradford is too important for petty political point-scoring, and over the last year as Portfolio Holder, I have worked with the other main political groups to ensure that there is wide support for the projects to create jobs and a sustainable future for our district’s economy.
Coun David Green, Portfolio Holder Regeneration and the Economy, City Hall, Bradford
