SIR - The idea of planting electronic monitoring chips in bins of householders to ensure more effective recycling of waste is akin to 1984's Big Brother scenario.

It is spying on people and must surely be against civil liberties.

This sort of intrusion into our lives is becoming more common. I can only think we are coming closer to being a secret state.

Where will all this end, I dread to think.
