SIR – As a Bradford citizen I find it shameful that the Council is cutting its grant to the Gingerbread Housing Project.
The project was started to give specialist help and support to lone-parents who were homeless. This may have involved domestic violence problems, but not necessarily. The service was open to men raising children alone, as well as women. In other words, it is unique.
This must have made a ‘working partnership with similar organisations’ extremely difficult. The building itself is purpose-built and well-maintained by the dedicated staff group. Having visited the project on a number of occasions, I am astounded that Jayne Hellowell, the Council’s relevant Commissioning Services manager, makes adverse comments about the quality of the service.
I know a number of people who have benefitted from the service over the years, including a woman who left the project to take a Social Anthropology degree at Sussex University and now holds down an extremely complex job with the NHS in Brighton. If this isn’t ‘Supporting People’ I don’t know what is! Please think again,
