SIR – The Conservatives seem to have a problem that stops them seeing beyond today. It is all now, never mind what the effect will be tomorrow, and now the chickens have come home to roost.

It is not as if the outcome was not obvious, as I saw it from day one. I refer to their latest idea of forcing families with an income of £100,000-plus to give up their council house which they may have lived in for most of their lives.

This is to try and relieve the housing shortage which they engineered by selling off council houses and not building replacements.

However, if they believe that someone with money should give up their residence to relieve the less well-off, there are many unused large houses and mansions with a myriad of rooms that could be converted into self-contained flats. But this is not going to happen, is it?

What they are suggesting is no solution. They will uproot people’s lives and livelihoods, destroy family connections and uproot children from their schools and friends.

I have to ask, do they have any clue as to what they are doing?
