SIR – I am writing regarding the article in the T&A (May 26) “uninsured have nowhere to hide”. Well, quite honestly, it appears they have. Barkerend in Bradford springs to mind.
I remember a similar article months ago. If Barkerend has, as stated, the highest rate of uninsured drivers in the country, then why don’t the police go street to street, road to road, on foot and stop it?
The new law doesn’t, in my mind, seem tough enough. I quote: “Motorists will receive a letter telling them their vehicle appears to be uninsured and warning them that they will be fined unless they take action.”
After that, it’s ifs and maybes, coulds or mights ie could be clamped. Court action could be taken – if it remains uninsured, if keeper fails to insure… This appears to be another futile attempt by the Government to stop a worrying and dangerous offence which some people have got away with for years.
