SIR – Re the new traffic islands on Harrogate Road.

I suppose there had to be a first time. I refer to the fact that in last Friday’s T&A, the item about these islands made mention of my name.

But it was spelt wrongly, showing my surname as Pickard. As a long time correspondent to your letters page, this is the first time that this has occurred, however, it was not the only mistake in this item as on two occasions the writer referred to Norman Road, instead of Norman Lane.

There is no Norman Road in Eccleshill, nor, as far as I am aware, in any other area of Bradford.

I have lived at my current address in the area since 1967, and I know Harrogate Road very well. As the traffic sergeant at Eccleshill police station for many years, I was familiar with its accident record. However, I do believe that the description “death road” is completely over the top.

I am all for road safety improvements, but only when they are necessary. The existing pelican crossings between Park Road and Sainsbury’s, plus the other crossing points, were perfectly adequate to help pedestrians across the busy Harrogate Road.
