SIR – Keith Thomson (Letters, April 14) falls into the trap of quoting unconfirmed reports (e.g. Wikileaks) that world oil supplies are dwindling. Well, they are not.

Shale oil deposits are the next massive reserve of oil supplies. The technology is different from that adopted for traditional oil extraction but the method and process is being developed rapidly to meet future anticipated consumer demand.

A final thought; vehicle engines are constantly being improved to provide more economical motoring. A comparison of present fuel consumptions with that of a similar model only a decade ago will show how great strides have and are being made in mpg figures.

Of course in the UK, we also have a Government that is doing its very best to ensure that the motorist only uses his car for essential journeys. How? By ensuring that through green policy fuel costs stay well ahead of inflation and by keeping taxation levels high.
