SIR – How come correspondents like Peter A Rushforth (Letters, April 16) say that hospitals, police and armed forces are important and none should be cut back, yet never mention our courageous firefighters?

Besides dealing with ubiquitous chip pan fires, they often risk their lives fighting huge blazes like the recent one at Prospect Mill, Thornton (T&A, April 15).

The safety of the public is paramount to these selfless individuals, and they should never be taken for granted.
