SIR - Countdown could be filmed down south after host Des Lynam, left, is thought to have threatened to quit after complaining about the 200-mile journey from his home in London to the Yorkshire Television Studios in Leeds (T&A, August 10). Bradford-born Richard Whiteley presented the show for 23 years and I, along with many others, thought he would be replaced by another Northerner.
Unfortunately this was not to be and we appear to have installed an outsider who says he is fully committed to the show but only apparently on his terms. Mr Lynam's starting salary was allegedly £600,000 per year - that's about £11,538 per week. Given the chance, who among us wouldn't travel twice the distance for half the money? Yorkshire Television should scour England's greatest county for a replacement and keep the show where it belongs - in the North!
