SIR - With reference to the letter from Councillor Kevin Warnes (T&A, 29), how come there are so many pensioners living in poverty in Shipley?

There should not be any especially if they are claiming all that is due to them, including housing benefits and council tax rebates plus all other benefits and concessions.

He goes on to say the pension credit system is absurdly complicated.

Well I am not exactly Einstein but I found it straightforward. You have to be straightforward with the DWP.

Even if you own your own house and have some savings you can still be eligible for credits, and if anyone has difficulty filling in the form they will come and help you.

If, as he suggests, you raise the basic pension for everybody that certainly would not be fair.

There are more rich pensioners than you claim poor' so how can you justify giving all pensioners the same amount?

That's why we have credits so it goes to those who need it most
