SIR – In a way, we have had a multicultural society for many years – African, Jamaican, Czechs, Poles, Russians, Chinese, Malays etc. all of whom, while retaining their national identity, integrated into British society, abided by our laws and learned the language.
If the Asian community really want a multlicultural society, why is it that instead of adjusting to our way of life, they expect us to adjust to theirs? Why do some of them want Sharia Law, their own schools etc? If the authorities said no to some of the more extreme demands, perhaps then we would see less resentment, prejudice and racism in society.
I have many Asian friends, I interact everyday with Asian people and I treat them the same as anyone else – with respect and courtesy, but I feel that the leaders of the Asian community do themselves no favours in their approach, attitude and demands in respect of their place in today’s society.
I am not racist, nor am I prejudiced. If we all admitted the truth and faced the facts, then perhaps we could have a more peaceful and multicultural society the way it should be.
