SIR – In admonishing my colleague Jason Smith and claiming he gets his figures on the EU from a biased source, Stuart Baker quotes Alexander Pope (Letters, January 22).
I shall quote Jeremiah: ‘There’s none so blind as those who do not wish to see, nor so deaf as those who do not wish to hear’.
Is he Pope, and am I Jeremiah? I rather think my quote is more relevant than his.
Officialdom alters the way it counts the unemployed or calculates inflation if one way makes the statistics look better than the current method.
Why does Norway pay a sizable amount to the EU budget? It must think that it is the lesser of two evils and in its own interests. Does Mr Baker contend that the Norwegians are idiots?
