SIR – With regard to the future of the Odeon, it is heartening to hear Councillor Jeanette Sunderland, leader of the Council’s Liberal Democrat group, say: “The Odeon should be returned to the Council for it to make the decision on its future”. She adds: “We have always held the view that the towers on the building should be retained.” (T&A, January 18) Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, leader of the Conservative group, says: “I would like to see the underlying character of the building retained in any new development.”

Surely any imaginative architect should be able to deliver this in this day and age.

It should not be wiped out of the cityscape altogether to be replaced by a ‘neutral’ development the likes of which can be seen anywhere else across the country.
