SIR - Councillor Simon Cooke appears to be in favour of climate change and all the resulting damage. Recently he was against more bus lanes and now he rails against any restrictions on flying (T&A, August 9).

He suggests that in producing only three per cent of climate change gas it is not significant and so misses the point. It is likely to double in the next five years, and is four times as significant because it happens high up in the atmosphere.

The UK production of carbon dioxide is rising rather than falling, from traffic, aviation and all the new houses that are being built and I would be interested to know what he thinks we can do to reverse this trend and start moving towards the 60 per cent cut that will be essential by the middle of the century.

It will take more than a couple of energy-efficient light bulbs, and will need legislation and some tough decisions - like taxing flying properly.
