SIR - Ken Pratchett lets his dislike of human rights run away with him in explaining how they never applied to us "holier than thou" British (T&A, August 8).

As I have previously noted, the British Government has been found more than any other to be in breach of rules drawn up mainly by British lawyers after the Second World War. Could we ignore our own rules?

Where UK law was found to be incompatible with human rights legislation it was up to the Government to amend the law.

Surely Mr Pratchett can see that it is better for UK citizens to be able to challenge the Government in British courts rather than be forced to sue the Government in a European court staffed with foreign and British legal experts. We can then decide to amend our own laws rather than have to be told by Johnny foreigner to do just that!
