SIR – Cars and alcohol are two big causes of damage and death.

Paradoxically, a licence is needed to sell one of them and a licence is required to buy one of them, so I have to agree with Graham Hoyle (Letters, January 8) about the introduction of drinking licences, but disagree with David Rhodes who in his letter (T&A, January 11) said raising the drinking age would be another nail in pubs’ coffins.

Taken to the logical extreme conclusion of his sentiment, let any person of any age drink alcohol and there will be no nails in any coffins, except those of the imbibers, of course.

When considering age limits for any activity, brains and brawn should not be confused.
