SIR – Yet again a councillor tells us that his hands are tied and he has to approve the demolition of the historic Winston Churchill public house in Wakefield Road.

As a boy attending Usher Street School, I remember six pubs or clubs between Prospect Hall (now a Sikh temple) and St John’s Church.

If the Churchill goes, only the tribute to our erstwhile French enemy, the Napoleon, will be left.

I applaud Councillor David Robinson for his criticism that the receivers, KPMG, have been minded more of their fees than the interests of the public, but action would speak louder than any words.

Perhaps if KPMG were reminded that their being a paid instrument of the Council invokes responsibilities as well as significant financial benefits, then they may review their stance to give greater emphasis on the public interest.
