New Year is, of course, traditionally a time for resolutions.

The end of one year and the start of another seems a particularly appropriate time to take stock and change things for the better, drawing a line under the past and looking to the future.

That is why some people will be counting down the hours to midnight today, knowing that is when a promise to themselves or to someone else to ‘give up this’ or ‘do more of that’ comes into force. We wish them every success.

But changing things for the better does not just come from such dramatic gestures, as a look at today’s newspaper shows.

The New Year Honours list is, as always, peppered with names of the great and the good.

But in among them, there are exceptional people from more everyday walks of life who have been rightly recognised for their services to others.

And Bradford district, of course, has its fair share.

What these people have in common is a desire to make a positive difference to their community, whether in their chosen profession, through public service, or voluntary work.

They, and thousands like them across the district, do this day in and day out, quietly and without a fuss. And in doing so, they are truly inspirational.
