SIR – Philip Davies seems to believe that new carriages will help to relieve overcrowding on the Airedale and Wharfedale trains (T&A, December 16).

If he used these trains regularly, he would know that they are almost all four-coach electric trains.

He would also know that many of the station platforms are only long enough for four coaches.

Without expenditure by Metro to extend these, then no new coaches will be used on these lines. In the present economic circumstances, such work is unlikely to be undertaken.
