SIR – Alan Raper seemed rather irate after reading in Court File, on November 3, that two motorists were fined only £130 and £100 respectively for driving without insurance, prompting him to ask: “What message does this send out?” (T&A, November 8).
But he was wrong to say they received no further penalty, as each had to pay £100 costs and had their licences endorsed.
The T&A always points out that in calculating the amount of any fine, the court takes into account the income of the offender as well as the seriousness of the offence.
We are not privy to that information, but if Mr Raper had perused Court File the next day, he would have found that of the eight motorists found guilty of driving without insurance, seven were fined £610 and one £525. All had to pay £100 costs and had their licences endorsed.
