SIR - A book entitled England our England, written by Vernon Coleman, seems to believe that the only function of the European Union is to sit around thinking up ways to destroy our England.

Our England which every day for almost 1,000 years has illegally, and usually brutally, occupied other people's countries.

Our England which dashed into the industrial revolution, forcing its working class into the worst living and working conditions in western Europe, while ordering them to breed for our England to ensure a cheap and plentiful supply of factory and cannon fodder, shoving young children up chimneys and down coal mines.

Our England, which still today ranks ninth from bottom in the percentage of children in officially defined poverty.

Interestingly, of the nine worst countries, six of them in order - the US, New Zealand, Ireland, UK, Canada and Australia - are English-speaking. How's that for the famed Anglo-Saxon social model?

Let's bury our England's shameful, brutal and bloodstained past and begin again, calling ourselves proud Europeans.

The EU, unlike our England, seeks equality and justice for all groups within its union. Expand your minds from little islander mentality.
