Of course we have reason to be grateful to members of our emergency services on a daily basis, but there are times when one of them behaves in such an exceptional fashion that they deserve a special mention.

There is no doubt that PC Adam Beecroft falls into that category as his bravery and quick-thinking may well have prevented members of the public from being seriously injured or worse.

When a man abandoned a stolen eight-tonne digger he was driving, leaving it to career down a road with its rear arm swinging wildly from side to side, PC Beecroft did not hesitate.

The courageous officer set off after it and managed to jump on board as it was heading for oncoming traffic and a cottage.

He then somehow managed to bring the machine safely to rest – despite having no idea how the vehicle’s controls worked.

There is no surprise to learn that his conduct and that of his colleague who chased the suspect have been hailed by his commanding officer.

PC Beecroft put the safety of others before his own – something that deserves the highest praise.

What a contrast to the cowardly and selfish behaviour of the man who jumped from the cab in the first place without a thought for others as he sought to escape.
