SIR - Thank goodness people are at last waking up to the fact that our green fields are being gobbled up at an alarming rate.

However, it is not the only problem. At present, gardens are being classified as brownfield sites (a loophole in planning law) and builders are seizing the opportunity to purchase perfectly good houses with large gardens with the sole intention of demolishing the property and building as many houses as possible on the land.

This has been an ongoing problem in Eldwick, and is destroying our village as well as creating neighbourhood unrest.

At last more and more MPs are waking up to this problem (T&A, July 14) and there is a widespread campaign to exclude gardens from brownfield sites. My thanks go to Phil Davies, our MP for supporting us in this.

Mrs A Woodford, Sheriff Lane, Eldwick
