SIR – As thousands wait in trepidation for the postman to deliver retrospective income tax demands due to mistakes on the part of HM Revenue & Customs, the full scale of that organisation’s incompetence is now clear.
But why are they picking on only one section of their clients, many must wonder?
What about the millions of pounds misappropriated by unscrupulous members of Parliament or the House of Lords throughout the 2005 Parliament!
Outstanding tax liabilities for both ‘benefits in kind’ or ‘capital gains’ must be enormous, and most ordinary taxpayers find it impossible to understand why the Government has not ordered the ‘Revenue’ to pursue these miscreants with the same vigour as the rest of us.
