A minority of Bradford City fans shamed the club and themselves at the final home game of last season by running on to the pitch and abusing away supporters.

That this happened on a day of remembrance for the victims of the Valley Parade fire disaster made their deeds all the more distasteful.

The response from the club, police and community at large was just what was required, with guilty individuals swiftly identified and appropriately dealt with.

Such actions reassured fans fed up of the hooligan element – and warned any would-be yobs – that this sort of conduct would not be tolerated.

That message was reinforced by warnings from police before this season got underway that any misbehaviour would be punished and also by the issuing of banning orders preventing troublemakers from attending games.

Sadly, despite such measures, it appears some so-called Bradford City supporters have been involved in more trouble.

Railway police are now reviewing CCTV footage after violence between rival fans following Saturday’s away fixture at Stockport.

It is too early to apportion blame and we hope that City supporters were entirely innocent of any wrongdoing – though that may be wishful thinking.

What we can say for certain is that anyone who is guilty must face the toughest punishments available. Eventually, they might just get the message.
