SIR – Thank you for your story (August 10) on the culvert repair work in Harden, ‘work’ being a word I use loosely!

The replacement of the culvert is termed ‘necessary’ by Bradford Council, therefore, despite the fact our postmaster is on the verge of bankruptcy, no compensation will be awarded.

As a fourth-generation Harden lass, I can’t imagine our lovely village without its post office.

The excuses from the Council as to why the work has stalled know no bounds! Initially they stumbled upon gas and water pipes – who put those there?

Then, when asked why the work wasn’t undertaken at the same time as the Ireland Bridge repair work, the answer was ‘the budget allocation for the culvert is 2010, the bridge 2009’, could the work have started in April then, not June?

Now a huge sewer pipe is the latest obstruction, apparently no-one knew it was there! It’s only been there since 1959, so I suppose we can let them off! Even I know that a proper underground survey should have been carried out before such a disruptive job was started.

It would seem not, and someone’s head should roll, preferably down the sewer pipe that appeared from nowhere!
