SIR – Pensioner D S Boyes thinks that George Osborne’s Budget was brilliant because he promised to restore the link with earnings to the basic state pension from April 2011 (Letters, June 25).
However, with public sector workers facing a two-year pay freeze, redundancies, shorter working weeks, pay cuts and firms now preferring to employ staff on a minimum wage, the earnings figure will struggle to maintain its current total, never mind exceed it.
Maybe Mr Boyes will be honest enough to inform your readers how better off he is after one year under the new arrangements.
