SIR – The Government cap on non-EU immigration is a step in the right direction, but several other aspects of the problem seem to have been overlooked.

One is the ‘Primary Purpose Rule’ which restricted the importation of spouses, immediately relaxed when Labour took office in 1997. Surely there are enough of every ethnic group in Great Britain to provide suitable partners now?

Another is ‘Asylum’ which draws migrants to the UK like a giant magnet. This under the outdated 1951 United Nations Convention on ‘Refugees’ designed to deal with the aftermath of the second World War and the detrimental effects of the Iron Curtain era, not 21st century global air travel and people smugglers charging thousands of dollars, aided by Europe’s completely open borders.

Also, the EU itself is a major problem as its citizens cannot be denied entry to this country or our lavish welfare system. Many come first to mainland Europe from the Third World, and once having an EU passport enter the UK.

To avoid dangerous future over-population, there needs to be a complete moratorium on most immigration and to leave the EU, if that’s what it takes.
