SIR – I read, with absolute shock and bemusement, the story (T&A, June 28) about a single man occupying a family home (provided by Incommunities) and refusing to vacate to allow one of the 120 families on the waiting list to benefit from it.
I found it appalling that £60,000 of taxpayers’ money has been wasted on this selfish man. He has not even paid rent! He is also likely to go to the European Court of Human Rights, which would cost even more money!
What ‘human rights’ does he think he is entitled to above and beyond those of needy larger families with too little space to live in comfort and dignity?
And if he can rustle up £40,000 to buy the house, why can he not be made to pay the rent back to the housing association? Or part of the legal-aid costs? Clearly this man is playing the system and the law needs to change to prevent further waste.
Let’s hope this is an area where the new government can safely make cost reductions.
