SIR – I read the story about the Bradford-based Beacon Trust doing a 12-mile walk from Bradford to Leeds Waterside on Kirkstall Road, highlighting the plight of destitute asylum seekers (T&A, June 17).
They do not know the meaning of the word “destitute”. I have been working 45 years and paid my taxes into the pot. Twelve months ago I was made redundant. After six months my job seekers’ money of £60.50 was stopped because my wife gets a state pension and a small private pension that she had to work very hard for. We do not get a penny now from the state.
To see these people march for asylum seekers makes my blood boil. They want to march for people like me and thousands more who have paid taxes into the pot and now can’t get a job, as well as the families who have had their homes repossessed.
Do-gooders we can do without. I walk miles and miles every day looking for work. I have to get on with it.
