SIR – Re “Council forced to cut £7.2 million” (T&A, June 11), as the Government needs to save £6 billion to reduce debt.
The Barnett Formula gives £5 billion a year to Scotland, Wales and Ulster – more than the Government pays the English regions. This should now be scrapped in favour of equal funding for all UK regions.
Even Joel Barnett, Labour Treasury Chief in the 1970s, says so.
It was originally intended as a temporary measure for five years. Now, 40 years later, it should cease. A reduction of £5 billion from the Government’s target of £6 billion would result at a stroke.
This might reduce Bradford’s £7 million demand. Why shouldn’t Scotland, Wales and Ulster all make the same sacrifices as those expected from the English regions?
Now is the time for equal treatment for all regions in the UK. Surely 40 years of unfair treatment of England is enough?
