SIR – Re the letter “Let viewers choose” from Miss D Cook (T&A, June 12). In light of the Cumbrian shootings recently, I feel Miss Cook has missed the point of ITV’s cancellation of Coronation Street.

The media, rightly in my view, has to show respect with sensitivity when these unfortunate tragedies occur.

ITV therefore took the right decision to pull Coronation Street off the air.

Contrary to Miss Cook’s view that the TV has an on-off switch, I would point out simply just turning the TV off is not the issue, it’s about respecting those who have lost their lives and their families.
