SIR – “For distinguished editorial writing, the test of excellence being clearness of style, moral purpose, sound reasoning, and power to influence public opinion in what the writer conceives to be the right direction, in print or online or both.”
That is the citation which refers to editorial works which are considered for the Pulitzer Prize each year.
Having read your shrill and misunderstanding of local feeling editorial of Thursday, June 10 – where you suggest tarmac be better than the Odeon – can we presume you will be not entering this year’s Pulitzer? Probably a wise move as we know you wouldn’t want to add even more embarrassment to our city.

EDITOR’S NOTE: On the contrary, the leading article you mention fits the bill perfectly and is certainly what this newspaper considers to be “the right direction”. The mere fact that you disagree with it is not a reason to denigrate it.
