SIR – From the impression given by Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg in the first TV debate, the public might expect he is clear about the principles his party stands for.
However, the notion that “fairness is wired into our policies” does not bear much examination.
The Lib Dem record on Bradford and Leeds councils, for example, shows them quite prepared to support Tories in those authorities against Labour.
Bradford, ruled by a Tory/Lib Dem alliance, is probably one of the least-competent authorities in England.
Of course Liberals may be happy to accept that Tory policy has “fairness wired in”, but if so, the expression is meaningless.
