Footballing rivalries being what they are, the news that Bradford City is moving its training sessions to Leeds will doubtless raise hackles in some quarters.

City bosses have taken a five-year lease on University of Leeds land at Weetwood after their current ground at Apperley Bridge proved to be unsuitable.

To echo joint-chairman Mark Lawn’s words, it does seem a bit odd that a borough the size of Bradford can’t accommodate its own professional football team.

Lawn says his negotiations with Bradford Council to find a suitable training ground have drawn a blank, while the University of Leeds welcomed the club with open arms.

Of course, the place where City’s players train is perhaps not that important in the great scheme of things – what matters is results on the pitch, and if better training facilities help to forge a stronger squad, then the location is not that big a deal.

As the contract to lease the Weetwood site is for five years, it seems that for the foreseeable future the City squad will be putting themselves through their paces there.

But in the intervening period it would be nice if efforts were made to find Bradford City a training home in the place where they belong.
