SIR – A G Goldsborough’s informative letter “Confusing traditions” (April 10) was spoiled somewhat by its triumphalist denouncement.
We Christians are aware of our bumpy history. As he points out, the-then hierarchy of the Church endeavoured to transfer the worship of the sun at the December solstice to that of the sun of righteousness as described in Malachi Chap 4, Verse 2.
But changing the brand name would not have fooled many then, even in 336AD. As he points out, there is no known link between December 25 and the actual birth date of Jesus of Nazareth.
Easter, however, is quite different and has little to do with spring. The date is anchored in the Hebrew Passover – adjusted somewhat.
Jesus the Christ was crucified on the Friday before the Passover and was resurrected on the following Sunday. The two most important dates in the cosmic calendar!
I am not cognisant with pagan activities, but would point out that the moon he mentions is the one created by the Almighty as described in Genesis Chap 1, Verses 16 and 17.
