SIR – It was sad to read of the gradual demise of Bradford’s Hungarian Social Club, as although aged just 13 in 1956, I remember well reports of the revolt against Communism there.
However, do many know of Bradford’s later economic link with that country?
As a light transport driver around 1995, I took many loads of pistons from A E Goetz (formerly Hepworth & Grandidge) of Neville Road, to General Motors at Szentgottard, just across the border from Heiligenkruetz in Austria: Many of the engines made there were subsequently sent by rail to OPEL at Bochum (Essen) in Germany to put into cars.
Later, as an owner-operator, I have delivered goods from Leeds to Pecs in the south of Hungary. I always found Hungarians to be very friendly and helpful at all times, especially the customer service or – Vamivatal – when ‘T’ Form clearance was needed before they joined the EU.
Hungary also makes very good red wine called Egri Bikaver or ‘Bulls Blood’, and I still have a few ‘Forints’ among my souvenirs.
