SIR – I support the market traders’ petition regarding putting an end to the temporary market events held in the city centre.
People only have so much money to spend, and if that money is spent at one of these street markets, then the permanent businesses, who pay high rents and rates, lose out.
The shops need our support 100 per cent, especially during these hard times, and events like these only distract from them.
The recent markets held at Christmas were a disaster. The German one packed up early, and the street market had stalls selling goods like pet beds, prams and cheap toys.
There are enough poor-quality retail shops in the city centre without guest traders adding to it.
And regarding the upcoming parking review; charging will deter even more shoppers from using the city centre.
Instead, the Council should encourage them by making all on-street parking free with a limit of two hours.
At least make it a temporary measure until the city centre begins to see some better times again.
