SIR – It would appear that the deal to sell one of our long-standing, thoroughly British businesses, Cadbury’s, to Kraft Foods is likely to go through.

There are, of course, certain concerns regarding this sale.

What will happen to the workforce? Will production stay in this country? And I am sure there are others.

It was reported (T&A, January 20) that the PM is determined that adequate investment continues, and Lord Mandelson is seeking a meeting with Kraft to get assurances.

On both counts, I give naught for their chances of success, as the Americans will do as they please once they have possession.

One may ask why I take this stance.

My answer? Think back to the sale of Westland on the Isle of Wight. When they purchased that company, their main interest was the Rotor Blade technology, of which Westland was the best in the world.

Our PM at that time, Margaret Thatcher, was assured that they would not close it down. Two years later, it was gone. If this sale goes through, there is no benefit to be gained for this country, but when did that fact seem to bother anybody?
